What Are SMART Goals?
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound — a system designed to turn dreams into actionable objectives.
1
S
The first step in creating effective goals is making them specific. Clearly define what you want to accomplish.
2
M
Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward each goal you set.
3
A
Goals should be challenging yet attainable to maintain motivation.
4
R
Ensure your goals align with your broader objectives and values.
5
T
Set a deadline to create urgency and maintain focus.
Specific
A specific goal answers the five "W" questions:
What do I want to accomplish?
Why is this goal important?
Who is involved?
Where is it located?
Which resources or limits are involved?
Instead of setting a goal to "lose weight," a specific goal would be "I want to lose 15 pounds in the next three months by exercising 4 times per week and following a balanced nutrition plan."
Measurable
A measurable goal includes specific criteria that let you track progress and know when you've achieved it.
Ask questions like:
How much?
How many?
How will I know when it is accomplished?
For example: "I will increase my company's quarterly sales by 10% by implementing three new marketing strategies and making five additional sales calls per day."
Achievable
Realistic Yet Challenging
An achievable goal stretches your abilities but remains possible. It should be realistic given your resources, time, and capabilities.
Consider Your Resources
Assess what tools, skills, and support you need to reach your goal. Identify what you already have and what you need to acquire.
Break It Down
Divide larger goals into smaller, manageable steps that build toward your ultimate objective.
Relevant
A relevant goal aligns with your other objectives, plans, and values. It matters to you and fits within your broader life or career context.
Ask yourself:
Does this goal seem worthwhile?
Is this the right time?
Does this match my other efforts/needs?
Am I the right person to reach this goal?
Time-bound
1
Set a Deadline
Every goal needs a target date to create a sense of urgency and prevent everyday tasks from taking priority over your longer-term objectives.
2
Create Milestones
Break your timeline into smaller checkpoints to track progress and maintain motivation throughout the journey.
3
Review Regularly
Schedule periodic reviews of your progress to make adjustments as needed and celebrate small wins along the way.
